CLEMSON’S BILL TREADAWAY PRINT LEADERSHIP FORUM
FEATURES SUSTAINABITY & INNOVATIONS

CLEMSON, SC — Clemson University’s Department of Graphic Communications (GC) held the Second Annual Bill Treadaway Print Leadership Forum on January 18. The forum’s focus “Commercializing Technologies” featured thirteen industry professionals covering a broad range of topics during daylong sessions that culminated in an evening dinner and address. Over 300 students as well as alumni, faculty and industry representatives attended the event.

The opening keynote by Don Carli, from the Institute for Sustainable Communications, set the tone for the day with the topic of Sustainability, one of Clemson's emphasis areas. GC senior, Kimberly Van Ness stated, “…he gave some great examples of companies that are thinking ahead to utilize their resources to decrease their global footprint. It was encouraging to hear companies are beginning to think on a global scale and want to ensure resources available to us will be accessible now as well as in the future.”

A broad array of forum topics were presented including “Change Management” by Henry Freedman of Technology Watch, “Innovation-The Process”, presented by Mike Ferrari of Procter and Gamble, and Maynard Benjamin of the Envelope Manufacturers Association with observations on “Intelligent Printing”. Dr. Bill Ray of Quantum Paper delivered the closing keynote titled “Technology and the Big Picture”, offering both opportunities and challenges as we define and develop the processes of printing. "Dr. Ray was captivating and obviously the whole audience enjoyed his presentation based on the many questions", noted GC senior Maggie Caplan, "I thought his presentation perfectly encompassed the purpose of the day—to learn and ignite excitement.” Student Jen Grove added, “Bill Ray blew my mind with his presentation on how light can be printed.”

Faculty member, Dr. Eric Weisenmiller, summed up the entire event stating, “The occasion of the Treadaway Forum provided an excellent opportunity to engage with a diverse group of top-notch professionals who are currently shaping the graphic communications industry. This timely, stimulating experience left us with a spirit of optimism for the future of the industry and the leadership role that Clemson has the ability to play as an interactive partner.”

The 3rd Bill Treadaway Print Leadership Forum is planned for January 31, 2008 and will focus on the evolution of markets, media, and manufacturing as the next generation transitions into leadership roles within the graphic communications industries.

About Bill Treadaway and Clemson University
As president of The Printing Industry of the Carolinas (PICA) for nearly thirty years, Bill brought leadership to many and varied efforts on behalf of the Clemson University and his industry. Clemson's graphics program was in its infancy when Treadaway learned of their efforts and made his position and many contacts available to help the University. He served as a catalyst for many creative ideas, connecting them with the means to move forward. He used his gift for marketing and promotion to educate the University leadership at the highest levels regarding the values of their graphics program and the enormous needs and opportunities to be served in the printing industry. When Bill passed away, friends worked with Clemson to develop the Annual Bill Treadaway Print Leadership Forum.

“Bill Treadaway was a man committed to the advancement of this industry as well as the Clemson program. It was a pleasure to be a part of such a forward thinking event in his honor with presentations by such seasoned industry leaders as Don Carli, Henry Freeman, Wilton Connor, Katy Bryant, and others. Students, faculty and industry participants each gained much from their insights and challenges for the future”, said Nancy Leininger, GC faculty member.
