Presentation of the Symposium objectives

Color Prerequisites—Understanding the Printing System
Overview of the flexographic printing system and how the components (anilox roll, doctor blade, plate, ink) come together for quality print.

Color: Its Perception and Evaluation
Discussion of how people “see” color and the effects of the viewing environment on color perception.

Color Reproduction Theories and Objectives
Explanation of the objectives of process printing with an overview of additive and subtractive color theory.

Color Measurement and Specification
Overview of color measurement devices and introduction to CIELAB color space.

Lunch (provided)

Color Reproduction: But What Comes First?
Explanation of how to define end use limitations and requirements when faced with unchangeable elements such as laminating inks or corrugated substrates.

Breakout Sessions. Small groups attend each of the three sessions in a round-robin fashion.

Session One: Anilox, Ink & Substrate
Detailed examination of a these critical elements of the flexo process.

Session 2 – Hands On Densitometry
Role and use of densitometer, plotting dot gain curves.

Session 3 – Color and Spectrophotometry
Color measurement and specification as pertains to process color printing.

5:30 – Social Hour

6:30 – Dinner at the Madren Center (Outdoor Terrace)

7:15 – Suppliers Panel Question and Answer Session
Following dinner, a panel of vendors and experienced converters will share their expertise and opinions on the latest technologies and innovations for the industry in response to questions from the audience.
Day 2 - Begin 8:00
7:45 – Shuttled run from Madren Center to Godfrey Hall Graphics Lab
Pastry Breakfast

8:30 – The Color “Fingerprint” Press Test
Explanation of the elements of a four-color fingerprint test form and conducting the press test.

Evaluating the Press Characterization
Discussion of how the information found in the fingerprint test is used to determine print curves, gray balance, and color correction.

Colorimetric Analysis of Characterization
Discussion of how colorimetric information is used to generate a profile of the printing system.

Process Control
The importance of repeatability—maintaining control of the printing system.

Lunch (provided)

Breakout Sessions. Participants will each of 3 breakout sessions, which will be run in a round-robin fashion.

Session One: Press Run Trail & Troubleshooting
Process control during live job

Session Two: Colorimetric Characterization Analysis
Evaluating the printed characterization; creating press profiles.

Session Three: Press-Side Color Evaluation
Evaluating the printed press sheet for color shifts.

5:30 – Social Hour with Presenters
Madren Center

Free evening
Day 3 - Begin 8:00
8:15 – Madren Center
Pastry Breakfast

8:30 – Image Capture and Control
Discussion of how to accomplish image capture and manipulation to optimize for the printing system.

Proofing for Flexo
Addresses the problem of making a proof that will accurately reproduce color that realistically compares to the flexo process printing.

Image Engineering
Demonstration of creative decisions to enhance an image for color reproduction.
